Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford was attracted to acting in her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor fit there. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her classmates. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime she already had made her television debut in an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her show in 1996.
